Sun-cured tobacco may be the least important today, but it once ruled the Virginia economy
Introduction The proliferation of flavoured tobacco products (including nicotine vapes) is well documented in the USA, as is their appeal to youth and young adults.13 Flavours mask the harsh taste of nicotine, promote sustained tobacco use and increase risk of nicotine dependence.3 4 In California, where the current study was conducted, 85.6% of high-school students who report current tobacco use reported using a flavoured product in 2023.5 Moreover, significantly lower odds of adult use of flavoured non-cigarette tobacco products were observed in California jurisdictions with a comprehensive local sales restriction.6 As of December 2024, a total of 13 US states (including California), 412 localities and three Native American tribes restricted sales of flavoured tobacco, covering nearly 27.5% of the US population.7 Similar policies banning the sale of some or all flavoured tobacco products have been enacted in more than 60 countries.8 To inform and evaluate compliance with laws that restrict tobacco sales and/or marketing, retail tobacco surveillance is routinely conducted by professional data collectors and tobacco control practitioners
