In 1969, Iceland was the second country in the world to require health warning labels on packs of cigarettes.[7] In 1971, Iceland was the first country to ban tobacco advertising in mass media, cinemas and outdoors.[8] It was also the first country to implement graphic health warning labels in 1985,[9] and then, in 2001, the first to prohibit tobacco and tobacco trademarks being visible to consumers at the point of sale.[10] Other measures included a smoke-free day, first held in 1979, as part of a national campaign to raise awareness among the public about the health risks of smoking
